Bakersfield Wedding Pro Jennifer Varner Pishinsky Interview

How did you get started in photography?
This is a funny story. I was obsessed with Wyatt (my hubby now) since I was 10 years old. Yes, love at first sight. We started dating at 12. Wyatt was really into photography, so of course, I learned right alongside him. We did it for fun. Around the age of 18, I started doing photography on a more professional level. Wyatt eventually gave it up, but I kept at it. I used to post on Craigslist to get business. I worked at a restaurant for about four years before leaving that job to focus on my photography business full-time. I have been in the profession ever since.

What do you love about photography?
Connection! It is one of the most important things for me. I love connecting with people and peeking behind the curtain of their lives. I am passionate about turning unseen moments into memories that are worth putting on my clients’ walls.
What do you feel is your specialty?
I would describe my work as activity-focused. I love very natural photos. While I understand the importance of posed shots, I am always looking for those genuine moments and raw emotions. I particularly enjoy capturing my couples and families in action. I often say, “Just do what you always do!” because I want to stay behind the scenes and capture those authentic moments. Of course, I guide my clients along the way and help them if they need help, but generally, I prefer to be a “fly
on the wall” as much as I can.

What are some wedding trends you are seeing?
I am noticing a lot less formality in weddings. Smaller wedding parties are becoming more common. Couples are moving away from cookie-cutter traditions and focusing on creating a more personalized event that reflects who they are.
What is your style?
About three years ago, I changed my style. I was trying to find my place amid a hard season, and now I am in such a good spot. My style is mainly documentary and photojournalistic, but also a sprinkle of editorial. I am drawn to emotions and capturing moments that truly matter.

Who is your perfect client?
I love working with clients who appreciate deep moments and have a strong sense of connection. My ideal clients are established in their careers, have great depth, and are typically around my age. When I am photographing families, I especially love seeing and capturing the love between parents and their children.
