As a wedding planner, I have the privilege of working alongside some incredible venue owners. While couples often fall in love with the beauty of a property, it’s the people behind the scenes who truly bring a venue to life and that starts with the venue owner.
Recently, I sat down with Mike, owner of The Nirvana Estate, to learn more about his journey, the lessons he’s learned in the event industry, and what makes his venue one of Bakersfield’s most sought-after wedding venues.

Although Mike has become a well-known figure in Bakersfield’s event community, his story actually begins in India. He moved to Bakersfield when he was seven years old and has called the city home ever since. However, despite owning one of the area’s most sought-after wedding venues, he prefers to keep a relatively low profile.
In a world where every business seems to be competing for attention online, Mike intentionally takes a different approach. He keeps things exclusive. There isn’t a traditional website, and even his social media presence remains private by design. For Mike, The Nirvana Estate isn’t meant to feel like just another venue. It’s meant to feel like a discovery. “When you’re at Nirvana, I want it to feel like you’re somewhere else entirely,” he explained. And honestly, he’s accomplished exactly that.
One of the things I hear most often from couples and guests is that they can’t believe they’re still in Bakersfield. The estate has a way of transporting you. With its architecture, landscaping, and atmosphere, it feels more like an escape to Tuscany than a venue tucked away in California’s Central Valley.
When I asked how he found his way into the event industry, it quickly became clear that hospitality runs in the family. Both his family and his wife’s family have ties to the venue business, making the industry feel like a natural fit. Still, the story of how he came to own The Nirvana Estate feels almost meant to be.

One of my favorite stories from our conversation was how Mike and his wife came to own the property. Before it became The Nirvana Estate, the two attended a wedding there as guests. While walking the grounds, his wife looked around and casually said something that would eventually change their lives: “I feel this place is going to be ours.” At the time, it was simply a feeling. A dream. An idea.
But in 2022, that dream became reality when Mike and his wife officially took ownership of the venue. It’s a story that perfectly reflects the power of vision, timing, and believing in possibilities before they exist. Whether you call it manifestation, vision, or perfect timing, it’s hard not to appreciate the full-circle nature of their story.

When I asked Mike what he enjoys most about owning a wedding venue, his answer was immediate. Meeting people. Every wedding introduces him to new couples, families, cultures, traditions, and stories. More importantly, he loves being part of one of the most significant days in a couple’s life. “It’s exciting helping people on one of the most special days of their lives,” he shared. He also takes pride in making every bride feel welcomed, comfortable, and celebrated from the moment they arrive. That personal investment is something couples can genuinely feel when they visit the estate.

One question I always enjoy asking venue owners is what stands out to them when working with wedding professionals. When I asked Mike what he appreciates most from wedding professionals, his answer was simple and immediate: “Treat the venue as if it were your own.” There’s an enormous amount of work that goes into preparing, maintaining, and protecting a venue. While most vendors are incredibly respectful, Mike says it stands out when professionals go above and beyond to care for the space.
The best vendor relationships happen when everyone views themselves as part of the same team, working toward the same goal: creating an unforgettable experience for the couple. It’s a simple principle, but one that strengthens relationships throughout the entire wedding industry.

Of course, owning a venue also comes with a few unforgettable stories. Mike shared a story about a couple who hired a coffee cart vendor but neglected to mention it to their planner or venue team beforehand. The vendor assumed they could plug into a nearby outlet without issue. Unfortunately, the equipment drew more power than the venue’s electrical system could safely support, resulting in a complete power outage throughout the property. An electrician had to be called immediately to restore power. While the situation was eventually resolved, it serves as an important reminder for couples planning their wedding. Every detail matters.
Whether it’s a coffee cart, food truck, specialty entertainment, custom lighting installation, or unique rental, your planner and venue team need to know about it. What seems like a small addition can require additional power, permits, logistics, or generators. This is exactly why planners ask so many questions. We’re not trying to complicate your vision, we’re trying to protect it.

Every venue owner has a collection of stories that stay with them forever. For Mike, one unforgettable experience happened when he was attending a friend’s wedding in 2023. He had recommended renting a tent because rain was in the forecast. The couple decided against renting one. The result? Rain poured throughout the celebration, and a powerful gust of wind sent decor, place settings, and other items flying off tables. As Mike laughed while recalling the memory of him standing there soaking wet and trying to hold things down on the table, he summed it up perfectly: “Mother Nature does not play.”

One thing that continues to surprise Mike is how many people sign contracts without actually reading them. He frequently receives requests from couples asking for exceptions to policies that are clearly outlined in their signed agreements. While the requests are often innocent, it’s a reminder that contracts exist for a reason. They’re designed to help everyone understand expectations and avoid surprises later in the planning process. As planners and venue owners, we genuinely want couples to have an incredible experience. Reading your contract carefully is one of the simplest ways to set yourself up for success.

As our conversation wrapped up, I asked Mike about his experience working with Fairy Godmother Events. His answer was incredibly sweet. “Pleasant, wonderful, humbling and relieving, very relieving.” He explained that what stands out most is the level of care we provide. Not only for the couple, but also for the venue, guests, and fellow vendors as well.
Then he shared something that truly meant a lot to hear: “No planner goes to the extent Fairy does.” Relationships between planners and venues are built on trust, communication, and mutual respect. Hearing those words from someone I admire and enjoy working alongside was incredibly meaningful.

When I asked Mike where he sees himself ten years from now, he smiled and offered a response that felt very fitting for someone who values privacy. “That’s a secret. Only time will tell.” If his journey to owning The Nirvana Estate is any indication, the future likely holds something extraordinary.

What struck me most during my conversation with Mike was his commitment to creating experiences that feel special, exclusive, and memorable. The Nirvana Estate isn’t simply a venue. It’s an experience designed to transport couples somewhere unexpected. A place where Bakersfield fades away and something magical takes its place.
Behind every beautiful event hosted there is a venue owner who genuinely cares about the people walking through the gates, the memories being created, and the stories that will be told long after the last dance. And for that reason alone, it’s easy to understand why so many couples fall in love with The Nirvana Estate.
