There is something special about a photographer who can walk into a wedding day and instantly bring a sense of calm, warmth, and confidence to everyone around her. Melissa Brannon is one of those rare artists who not only captures beautiful images but also pours love, attention, and genuine care into every couple she serves.
We sat down with Melissa to learn more about her journey, her heart for storytelling, and what continues to inspire her behind the lens.

Honestly, it probably started back in high school when I was the yearbook photo editor. I got to run around campus with the school camera, documenting everything and choosing what made it into the yearbook. I loved creating the spreads and telling the story of our school year through photos.
Even then, I never imagined I would pursue photography as a career. I actually wanted to become a doctor. I earned a degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from UC Davis, but right after graduating I got married, had my son, and realized that dream no longer fit the life I wanted.
I bought a camera to take pictures of my son, friends began asking me to photograph them, and one step at a time the path opened. I photographed my first wedding and instantly fell in love with the emotions, the structure, the families, and the honor of capturing something so deeply meaningful. I knew in that moment I was exactly where I was meant to be.

They truly are two different worlds, but my Type A personality has served me well in both. All the discipline, structure, and focus from my science background helps me with timelines, organization, staying calm, and anticipating what is coming next.
Science taught me precision, weddings let me turn that precision into something heartfelt.

I would describe my style as vibrant, romantic, timeless, classic, and true to life.
But what truly sets me apart is not just the style, it is the experience. I take the time to deeply understand my couples, their story, their vision, and the moments that matter most to them. That connection allows me to create galleries that feel personal and emotional, not just beautiful.
Because of that, I don’t hire associate photographers to take my place when I’m already booked for a date. My work is relationship driven. I want each couple to feel like my only clients, valued, understood, and genuinely loved from the moment they book to the moment they see their photos and even after the photos have been delivered.

My favorite part overall is being invited into such a personal, emotional space and sharing the day with people I genuinely care for. Weddings allow me to step into a family’s story, even if just for a day, and that is such an honor.
The moment I always look forward to (aside from the couples portraits which I also love) is right after the bride steps into her dress. That first look in the mirror, the emotion, the anticipation, the “it is finally happening” moment, you can almost feel years of dreaming settling into reality. It is pure magic every time.

This one came from early in my career, maybe my first or second year shooting weddings. A couple booked me from out of state for a beautiful California wedding. They were stunning, successful, and planning at a beautiful venue, and I remember thinking, why me?
I expected a big production, but when I arrived, the entire day was simple in the most meaningful way. No flashiness, no theatrics, just love, family, and deep connection. It was all about their marriage, not just their wedding. And they were so perfectly in sync. Their vows were some of the most heartfelt I’ve ever heard.
Today, they are expecting their fifth baby and they are still just as connected as they were that day. Their wedding has stayed with me all these years.

By the time the wedding day arrives, my couples already know me. We have had calls, meetings, engagement sessions, and conversations that build trust long before I ever pick up the camera on wedding day.
So when I photograph them, it feels like a friend is there, cheering them on, guiding them, and having fun with them. My goal is to make the camera disappear and help them feel supported, natural, and relaxed.
Hearing that it felt like spending the day with a best friend is always the greatest compliment.

Do not settle just because the price is right or the Instagram feed is pretty. Look through full galleries, ask questions, and make sure you genuinely connect with the photographer. They are with you your entire wedding day, which makes the relationship incredibly important, especially for couples without planners.
You deserve someone you trust with your memories.

I am loving the candid, authentic, filmy feel that has become so popular. Real emotion, real movement, real moments. Less perfection and more storytelling. It helps you feel the day, not just see it. I feel very inspired when I see this style so I try to add in a good mixture of this in addition to classic poses so it feels true to my style as well.

I don’t love Selective color and I’ve seen it start popping up again recently.

What I love most is that someone from your team is always right there when anyone needs you. You anticipate everything, stay ahead of every detail, and create the smoothest experience from start to finish.
Every Fairy Godmother wedding I have photographed has been seamless, joyful, and beautifully executed. Things happen at weddings, but your team handles each moment with grace and calmness. Working with you feels like being part of something magical.
I am excited to continue growing alongside my couples, exploring new creative ideas, and leaning even more into storytelling that feels emotional and intentional. Personally, I am looking forward to more quality time with my family, watching my kids grow, and embracing whatever new adventures come our way. Every year brings new lessons, new couples, and new inspiration, and I feel so grateful for all of it.

Melissa approaches every wedding day with heart, intention, and a calming presence that instantly puts couples at ease. Her work is more than photography, it is connection, storytelling, and the honoring of once-in-a-lifetime moments.
