“My journey as a DJ began during my senior year at West High School. Noticing the subpar quality of DJs at our school dances, I convinced our principal to let me take on the role. With the help of a friend’s father who owned a local club, I borrowed his speaker system and transformed our school events. My love for music runs deep, stemming from a family immersed in musical talent—my grandfather played the saxophone, my mother played the flute, and there was always music at church. An influential figure in my life was my uncle in Mississippi, a well-known radio DJ who owned a music store. His extensive music collection greatly impacted me.

“Every day after school, I walked past the old Warehouse music store on Ming Avenue, eagerly awaiting Tuesdays when new releases came out. Before CDs, I always had a cassette ready to record songs from the radio, creating my own playlists. Winning tickets to a Snoop Dogg concert led me to call the station, where I was asked if I had ever considered DJing. This opportunity led to a two-year stint with Clear Channel’s Hip-Hop Kiss 95, during which I also worked on fragrance launches for Macy’s, including events for Gwen Stefani and Usher. I later met mentors Vino and Allen, who introduced me to DJing for weddings, corporate events, and private parties. I have been fortunate to learn from amazing mentors in this business.”

“I prioritize truly listening to my clients. I encourage them to send me playlists and genres they enjoy, allowing me to tailor the experience to their tastes. On the day of the event, I excel at reading the crowd and adjusting the music accordingly. My passion for music spans all genres and artists, giving me a broad repertoire to draw from. I love having the freedom to select songs for the guests, occasionally adding some personal favorites. I am not afraid to experiment, knowing I can easily change tracks if something doesn’t resonate with the audience. Bringing joy to people through music is my ultimate goal, and I love seeing people happy and having fun, knowing I played a part in that.”

“Trends and innovations in the music industry, such as those influenced by TikTok, have a significant impact on my work. Couples often want to recreate moments they’ve seen on the platform, and I’m always excited to incorporate fresh, new ideas. I share any concerns with my clients but am always willing to try something new. Movies also play a role in setting trends; for example, after the release of “Mamma Mia,” ABBA became one of the most requested artists.”
